Child benefit for children under 18 years of age
Children under the age of 18 are automatically entitled to this benefit.
This means:
- No income assessment.
- No additional proof of education required.
- Entitlement is independent of nationality, provided that the residence permit is valid.
Child benefit for children over 18 years of age
Child benefit can continue to be paid even after the child's 18th birthday – up to a maximum age of 25.
Requirements include, for example:
- School education
- Vocational training
- University studies
- Transitional period between two courses of education (max. 4 months)
- Voluntary service (FSJ, BFD)

Child benefit when living abroad
You may also be eligible if:
- Your parents work or live in Germany
- Your child is temporarily staying abroad
- You have ties to the EU or certain third countries
